*Archive?* Where to start?

Post by cicero »

I have just started to look into my family history and have one or two documents to kick me off but I would be interested to know what web sites if any can help me on my way and if so if one is better than another?

I don't know exaxctly what documents they can access although I have seen that they make a charge so all the more reason for knowing which is good and which isn't before I pay my money out!

Any advice gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Welcome cicero and Happy Hunting.

As you say it can get expensive but some things are free -- have you found the a Family Search site yet -- by no means comprehensive but you can strike lucky.

Some areas have more free on line than others -- which areas are you interested in in particular?

Hello cicero and welcome to the forum - hope you enjoy our company.

Here are a few free sites that are very helpful :
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... search.asp - for Baptisms and Marriages mainly before 1837
http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk - for local births deaths and marriages in the West Midlands
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk - for local births deaths and marriages in other counties
http://freebmd.org.uk - for national births, deaths and marriages

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/
http://www.findmypast.co.uk
- for a full index of births deaths and marriages, census and other useful records - you will have to pay for both of these

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk - also has births deaths and marriages, census records and is chargeable. I just use this site for making contact with other people who are researching my families, if you use it just for this it costs only a few pounds a year.

One free site is a must for anyone embarking on tracing their family is http://www.genuki.org.uk - which contains a large collection of genealogical information for England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Have a look on our Black Country Tree - http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com - maybe some of your ancestors are here

Why don't you post some of the information you already have and maybe we can help - please be careful not to include any information on living people.

Good Luck - Maggie

Hi, folks

Well thanks to all who responded plenty of useful info. there.

Slightly puzzled by peterd's response mentioning Salford and the name Hardy? Are you psychic?

It will take me a while to go through the info. you given and this morning I also arranged to visit my local library (Stockport Central) on Monday to look at what they have
available.

I've decided to go mad and try to find out about my paternal grandfather and family (who I never knew) and my mother's family on both sides so there's lots to work on.

I have an address for the family but when I try to find it on the census for 1911 it can't find it which is maybe down to my error but slightly perplexing.

If anyone can help confirm the address I have on the census it is 11West Burton Street, Regent Road, Salford 5

I have also put a query in the West Midlands section as I have connections to Birmingham and Worcestershire.

Thanks again folks for all the help you have given.

Hi, Antie Em,

That's kind of you to look it up for me. That's certainly the address I have but not the family. I have the address form my dad's birth info. which is 1919 but it looks as if the family didn't live there in 1911.

The family name is Hardy. I didn't get any result for that address when I searched so may I ask where you got it from please?

Thanks.

Got this from Find My Past - can you give us a bit more information on the family - perhaps someone can find them. Sometimes another pair of eyes helps.

My father's name was Eric William Hardy born December 26 1919 in Pendleton, Salford (I don't know where exactly) and his father was (I believe) William Hardy. My grandmother's maiden name was Heywood or Heyward.

Apart from the address given before that's all I know currently.

Cheers.

Your father's birth was registered here : His birth might have been registered at the beginning of 1920 if he was born in December 1919.

Eric William Hardy - Registered March Qtr 1920 - Salford District
Mother's Maiden Name is Heywood

You probably need to get this certificate to find out your grandmother's name - then you can look for the marriage. I have looked but can't find it with just her surname.

Hi

You are right about it being registered in 1920 and you have confirmed my grandmother's maiden name was Heywood not Heyward as my mother thought.

My grandmother's Christian name was Margaret.
