Re: Hannah Smith , born 16 Apr 1797
Peterd, thanks for the list of Smith entries on the I.G.I. (via pm). As you mentioned, it appears to be two different families, one with the father recorded as William and the other with the father recorded as Willm - and both married to a Sarah. As if the name Smith wasn't hard enough... I did find...

Re: Hannah Smith , born 16 Apr 1797
Hi Linell, Di and peterd, Thanks for all the great suggestions. Fifty would be old for the hard lives they lived, but as Di suggested, if Hannah was in the Workhouse, wouldn't she still show up on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records at the Workhouse??? Are there records for the Dudley Union Workh...

Re: Hannah Smith , born 16 Apr 1797
Hi peterd, Thanks for the christening for James Smith. It does look like a good possibility. Hannah Smith christened 25 Dec 1798 at St Thomas, Dudley, daughter of William and Sarah Smith is the one I've been leaning towards, but just wasn't sure how to "prove" it was the correct entry. You...

Hi Di, Thanks for all the great suggestions. I should have mentioned I posted the Mansell information separately - see post for Mansell and Nightengale families. That is my ggg grandfather, Benjamin Mansell, Jr. (b 2 Jan 1828 in Dudley) who is listed in the 1851 census at Kidsgrove, North Staffordsh...

Re: Hannah Smith , born 16 Apr 1797
Yes, I have corresponded with Terry. Terry (a she) answered one of my Mansell queries earlier this year. Turns out she only lives a couple hours from me. Linda, Gill and somebody named Nigel are also researching the Mansells. That's why this Black Country Tree makes so much sense - we can all work t...

MANSELL and NIGHTENGALE families
My ggg grandfather, Benjamin Mansell, Jr. was born 2 Jan 1828 in Dudley, the son of Benjamin and Hannah (Smith) Mansell. On July 18, 1847 Benjamin Mansell, Jr. married Mary Ann Nightengale at Dudley, England (marriage reference # 18 347). By 1851 census, the family had moved to Kidsgrove, North Staf...

What a great idea! I am new to this forum, but love the idea of creating one big Black Country Family tree! So many times I have duplicated the same research someone else has already done on the same line. It makes so much more sense to work together with others who may be researching the same famil...
