Where do I go to get info. before 1841 census?
I have managed to get back with four of my eight lines to the 1841 census, and now I'm not sure how to progress. I've checked BDM data, and used some, but generally what's next? My lines are all over the north of England and Scotland, so trips to local archives or churchyards would be few and far be...

Re: Transport in 1800s
I've found a useful guide to disused railways - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:D ... humberland
Ada could have got within about 20 miles of her destination at Horsley Vicarage by train. Not such a monumental journey as I originally thought!

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Jimmy, However John Bryden married (probably) Sarah Ann Tattersall in 1862.

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Sorry again. I think I'd better go and have a lie-down. Of course Ada wasn't born in 1871! Argh!

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Sorry, I got it all wrong. The one I think is right is the John Briden who married Sarah, not the one who was widowed. There's another reason why I think the widowed one is not the right one, and that is because there is no sign of Ada (1873) who would be just 8 years old.

Re: Bridon/Brydone
I'm pretty sure the first one is right. The reason is that Ada, his daughter, was born in 1873 in Kirkbymoorside and that's where this John Bridon was living just two years earlier. Also he was a tailor there, which I know from family knowledge. I can't find the second one in the 1881 census. I'm us...

Re: Transport in 1800s
Thanks for those links, SRD - very useful to get a clearer picture of transport at the end of 19C. Apparently there was a turnpike built from Newcastle to Jedburgh at the end of 18C, probably on the routes of present day A696 and A68. I still haven't found out if the railway reached Otterburn by 189...

Re: Transport in 1800s
Yes, I have seen Tess, but a long time ago. I notice that the vicar also had a groom/domestic servant as well as the 18 year old nursemaid, so he must have had a horse and relied on that for transport, probably both riding and pulling a trap. There might well have been a mail coach to Otterburn as i...

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Sorry Jimmy, that last reply was a bit incoherent! Past my bedtime!! I looked up John Bridon in Find My Past using the variants option and found him in the 1851 and 1861 census as well as his marriage in 1866. His occupations as apprentice tailor in '51 then tailor in nearby Malton in '61 confirmed...

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Hi Jimmy
YES!! That's him. Confirmed by his occupation initially as tailors apprentice, then as tailor. So grateful - I can move on now.
Thank you.

Re: Bridon/Brydone
Sorry, I've just realised that Ada's father's name is listed. I'll try to track back using this name. Thank you.

Hi Jimmy
Yes, thank you. I have this which is the marriage between my husbands grandmother and grandfather. What I want is some earlier reference that will give me the name of her father.

Transport in 1800s
I have been interested in how some of my ancestors have moved about, from place to place. I think this is probably mostly due to 'tied' cottages and rented accommodation, but my interest then moved on to an interest in what sorts of transport were available to them. One young woman (18 years old) mo...

Bridon/Brydone
Hello everybody, I'm new to this forum and have only been actively constructing my own and my husband's family trees for a month or so. My own family lines have been relatively easy to track back in the various census lists (I am using Find My Past), but my husand's have been much more difficult. I ...
