This is a from a review of a book which lots of you will have read. Guess which one.
The heroine leaves an impression of "a decidedly vulgarminded woman - one whom we should not care for an aquaintance, whom we should not seek as a friend, whom we should not desire for a relation..."

Either that or he listened to Woman's Hour like I did!
Jane Eyre and Vanity Fair were reviewed by the same person and this was what she said about Jane Eyre! She seems to have loved Vanity Fair.
I suspect that it was coloured by the reviewer not liking Wuthering heights either.
