Hi all
I have found my gggrandfather and mother + of course their 4 children came from this area.
Nicholas Powell b abt 1826 in Ireland.Died in Castleford 1885.
Married to Elizabeth Sheldon 1819-1884.A local girl.Born in Dudley Baptsed in Burslem.
It is beleived her parents had The Seven Stars Public House.
Children
Frank 1848-1901
Fancis 1849-
John 1851-
Ann 1859-
All the children were registered in oldbury.
The family later moved North to WestYorks which of course is where i come in.
Nicholas arrived in the uk about 1835 with his father James Powell from Ireland his father was a soldier, i estimate his birth to be about 1800, now sadly thats all i have on James , this guy has been driving me mad for 2 years, just cant trace him.
Anyones help would be most welcome.
Regards
Michael

Yes, I put that 1841 census on the thread in Military.
Had a good look for James in the military records but there is nothing that matches at Chelsea or the Militia.
There are a few officers in the army listings but without further information it is impossible to match him up.
James could also be with the East India Company and FIBIS would be a good place to look.
Had a good look for a Nicholas Powell (and variants of) being born in Ireland via that VERY EXPENSIVE site, Irish Family History Foundation, and found zero which is a worry.
