My father-in-law Thomas Fletcher Meredith was born in Birmingham in 1916, son of William Charles Meredith and Martha Ada Skipp. ( address #8 Bullock Street). He joined the Somerset Light Infantry in 1936, was seconded to the parachute regiment in India and remained in the army after the war. His Mother died in 1947. He married Margarete Voigt whom he met in Germany as a member of the army of occupation. They had one daughter, born in 1949 and a stepdaughter Elke.
I believe that he had two brothers, Charles and ?(maybe William). He met one of them in Egypt, probably during the war. That brother was probably in the Royal Artilery.
William Charles Meredith was a labourer, possibly in a iron works. He jointed the British Army in WW1 as a cook; Bantam brigade?? His parents were Thomas Fletcher Meredith and Mary Ann Sealbourne??? William may have had a brother Thomas Fletcher and several sisters. All birth death marriage certificates that I have been able to find indicate were registered in Aston.

We have not found any leads on TFMs brothers. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who with any leads on the family and its decendent. My wife may have cousins still alive.

Thanks very much. Tom has been dead for 5 years and we have been struggling to remember the things that he talked about. Walter was a name we could not remember. Tom was born on 20 Dec so registration probably did not occur until 1917 and therefore a Mar 1917 index. By way of note, he joined as a private soldier and finished his career as the senior quartermaster officer for the whole British army. A remarkable man!

We hope that our efforts to trace the family are not too late and that some cousins might also be interest and pop out of the woodwork

Thank you very much. This info looks very promising. The ages are about right. Mary A.=Mary Ann(maybe)...It would be nice to pin down her maiden name. William C age is about right also. I will follow this up. Things tend to be a little a little slow when dealing from the other side of the world! We tend to blame Canada Post and their delivery routes through Siberia.

I found a copy of birth entry for William Charles which shows dob 18 july 1880 rather than a dob of 1881 but it could be the same person since his birth was registered in Wednesbury... with parent names being the same. I may have to invest in a trip to England to try and confirm any of this.

Don't forget that on census transcriptions the year of birth is estimated from the age given -- so someone who was born in July 1880 was put down as being nought years of age and because the census was in 1881 -- they calculate the year of birth as 1881-0=1881

if he had been born eg feb 1880 his age would have been given as one and so the year of birth calculation would have been 1881 - 1 =1880

so the entry you found certainly looks like a good possibility
