Advice on Tracing an Ancestor pre-1837

I'm trying to trace information on my ancestor Henry BAKER. The IGI shows that Henry had SIX children baptized at St Marys, Lichfield, showing that he must have married pre-Aug 1746 (unfortunately there are no likely marriages on the IGI). Here are the children:

1. CATHERINE BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female
Christening: 13 MAR 1757 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

2. JOHN BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 19 JAN 1750 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

3. GEORGE BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 JAN 1755 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

4. HENRY BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: AUG 1746 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

5. BETTY BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female
Christening: 16 APR 1749 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

6. WILLIAM BAKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 18 AUG 1753 Saint Mary, Lichfield, Stafford, England

It would seem that Henry wasnt born/baptised or married in Lichfield. In fact there were no 'Henry Bakers' married anywhere in Staffordshire between 1710-1750 and only two in Worcestershire! (one to an Anne Pitt on 04 OCT 1742 Old Swinford, and one to a Mary Harper on 31 MAR 1746 at Kington, Worcs). Is it possible somebody would have travelled that far in the mid 18th century to have their children baptised in Lichfield, or am I going about it the wrong way.

Regards,
Darren

Hi

I think you can rule out the Ann Pitt marriage because that couple stuck around to have children in the same area. I'm not so sure about the marriage to Mary, there mat be one child in the IGI but down as Baxter - a reasonable mis-transcription.

I can find some marriages for Henry Baker in Staffordshire in the IGI but none are very close. There are also odd ones in Shropshire too, but again not really close.

It is a bit risky assuming that all the records have been transcribed and entered in the IGI - they haven't. If you have the chance I would say get a look at the baptisms (in case it says anything else) and check backwards in the marriage section of the same church.

Someone else mght be able to help, Lin haunts the Lichfield archives :-) and might have a good idea.
