Whilst hunting through the churchyard of St. Peter's , Harborne.....looking for family headstones.... my parents came across this one.
As we have KETTLEs in our family tree they were curious about this one

sorry about the picture quality.... a bit fuzzy!

It says Mary LETTICE ( daughter of James & Elizabeth HARRISON) d. 24 Feb 1850...aged 38..."her path was rugged but her end was peace"
and.... John KETTLE .. son of James and Elizabeth HARRISON d.31 Oct 1850 aged 22..."he lived beloved and died lamented"

... looks like the names of James & Elizabeth are also on the bottom of the stone.... death for James 1859?

I found a James and Elizabeth HARRISON on the 1841 and 1851 census living in Mill Lane Harborne... he was a farmer.
Can't work out how the son can be KETTLE? not HARRISON?.... haven't been able to puzzle that one out :?

Don't know if they are related to my family but just curious..... and those words next to Mary LETTICE are quite something, don't you think?

So... don't know whether any of you can puzzle this one out?

Hi Expat, I think Lettice is her middle name, she must be Mary Lettice Harrison, same with John, he was John Kettle Harrison, they wouldn't add the children's surnames on the Tomb as parents James and Elizabeth Harrison are recorded on the stone. Are Mary and John on the 1841 Census?

HTH from Linell.

Thanks Linell,
I hadn't thought of that...... did I read somewhere that the middle name was sometimes the mother's maiden name?

Here is the 1841 census info. for Mill Lane, Harborne

James Harrison....55...abt 1786..Male...Staffordshire
Elizabeth Harrison...55 ...abt 1786...Female...Staffordshire
Sarah Harrison...20...abt 1821...Female...Staffordshire
Emma Harrison...15...abt 1826...Female...Staffordshire
Jane Harrison....15...abt 1826...Female...Staffordshire
James Harrison....14 ....abt 1827...Male...Staffordshire
John Harrison....12...abt 1829...Male...Staffordshire

and there is a John there of about the right age,

Hi Expat, yes middle names could be either mother or grandmother's surnames, but not always, I have a Howard Garnett Stringer, and haven't found any trace of a Garnett. I suppose Mary Lettice Married, and she is on the 1841 Census with her spouse. Linell.
