I've just received the baptism record for my ancestor Samuel BAKER (baptised Lichfield St Mary 18 Feb 1794). I've also found him and family on the 1851 census which states that both him and his wife Elizabeth were born in Lichfield. Is it save to therefore assume that they would have definitely been married in Lichfield as I cannot find a wedding record/date for a marriage in Lichfield anywhere?!

The second part of my query concerns pre-1837 birth/death records. On Samuel's baptism record it says his parents are John BAKER and Anne BAKER. Please could somebody advise how a beginner family tree researcher would track down records for john BAKER. I couldnt find a match on the IGI Index or on any censuses or indeed a baptism record for him? Is this the end of the line if there are no definite records?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Darren -- I don't think any of us would say it was ever definitely the end of the line because so often having abandoned a line something pops up to surprise us but it definitely gets more tricky and needs to be more hands on than internet based.

Just because a baptism doesn't appear on IGI does not mean it does not exist -- IGI is still a work in progress --

It would be likely that the parents of someone who was baptised in 1794 could be dead but you might be lucky and find that death after 1837 and hence a record of it. Death and Burial notices are not always forthcoming with a lot of family details but again you might strike lucky -- Wills are another option --

Last thought -- had Samuel got any brothers/sisters?
