I'm doing a bit of third party research at the monent, as well as continuing with my own, and have come across the birth certificate of a Lucy Gladys Brookes born in 1921 in Oswestry in Shropshire. Unfortunately there is no father named on the certificate and from discussion with the relatives the father was never known, or if he was that secret was never shared.
I've recently discovered that bastardy records are quite useful in identifying the father of illigimate children, but unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking.
Can anyone suggest a way forward?
Thanks

I don't know whether they still had Bastardy Orders in 1921 or whether it was part of the earlier Poor Laws system -- hopefully someone else will be able to tell us

Try the Shropshire Family History Society.
http://www.sfhs.org.uk/They will be able to help you with a specific parish.
Unfortunately what is kept and by whom varies greatly.

MG is right, Bastardy Orders were before 1800, maybe better to search Solicitors Records, someone making ' a maintenance claim.' You need to find out if any such records are held at Shropshire Archives. HTH Linell.

Thanks. I've already popped an email off to the SFHS. I'll see if I can do the same to the Shropshire Archive too.
