I was wondering how I was going to get on writing reports all weekend without regular doses of sanity!

Unfortunately, the server move meant a DNS change, which takes a while to roll out across the internet as a whole. Anyone accessing the site via an internet provider whose DNS hasn't updated will see the old server, so it might be a little bit quiet round here until things get back in synch!

thank you --- I won't claim to understand that letter for letter but I get the drift that you know what you are talking about (for which I am very grateful) and that I might have to wait until I have been to bed and woken up again before some of the others find their way back to us.

Technology is an amazing thing --- I'm just glad there are people who know what to do to make it better when it gets sad!

I thought it might have been the IPV6 rollout stuffing up the DNS as several sites were unreachable this morning.

Glad to see it was something simpler.

Don't understand any of the technical 'lingo' ..... but really glad you are back up and running!

What is a DNS?

How do they get back on?

DNS = Domain Name Server

It converts the URL into the IP Address and routing information need to find the server hosting the website.

So if the IP address of the server changed then an out of date DNS would be pointing to the old server.

Because the internet is running our of IP addresses they have started introducing IPv6.

Its introduction may cause issues with some DNS servers and/or websites so that may delay some of them updating.

you know when we copy?

I am lost on this stuff

can we get them back on?
or do they just have to wait for catchup?

DNS = Domain Name System

It's like the internet's address book and converts human readable web addresses into IP addresses which computers can understand. When you move servers, it can take 24 hours for the DNS records to update around the internet.

If anyone's having an issue, it's worth their while shutting down and restarting their computer. When you access a site, your computer will store the DNS record locally for a while. A reboot should cause their computer to refresh any stored records and should then hopefully fetch the new server location.
