I have been trying to find out about my grandmother's family line since she passed away 3 years ago. I inherited what family pictures she had and am very interested in finding out who these people are. My parents divorced when I was young and I did not have the opportunity to talk to my grandmother about her family in England before she came to Canada.

I have a marriage certificate from when she was 17 and I know that my aunt was born in England as well. I do not know what happened to that marriage. Grandma married my grandfather in Canada in 1948. I have met some great people along the way who have helped me find what could possibly be my grandmother's mother's name. Here is what information I have to date:

-Grandmother was born Ruby Millicent Smith (she was called Rita here) on December 5, 1913 in Halesowen, Worcestershire, England, UK.
-Father's name George Smith according to the marriage certificate (Born in 1880 Winchester, Winchcomb, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, England, UK ?).
-Married William Joseph Lowe on April 6, 1931 in St John Harborne, Staffordshire, England, UK (Marriage D3211 No. 21 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St John Harborne in the County of Stafford).
-Her daughter Veronica Mary Lowe was born on August 12, 1943 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England UK
-I have been given the information that my grandmother's mother's name was Harriett Lowly Greaves (Born Dec 1884 in Halesowen, Worcestershire, England, UK )

Any help would be greatly appreciated to get past the brick wall I am at right now. To date I have not found out if my grandmother had any siblings.

Here's a link to Harriet, think you may need to purchase some Marriage Certificates to prove all the connections, happy hunting from Linell.

Possible 1911 -- You would need Sidney George's birth certificate to confirm Harriet's maiden name
1911 47 Birmingham Road Halesowen
SMITH, George Head Married M 34 1877 Labourer At Iron Tube Works Hales Owen Worcst
SMITH, Harriet Wife Married F 28 1883 Halesowen Worcestshire
SMITH, Sidney George Son M 0 (3 MONTHS) 1911 Halesowen Worcestshire (I think this might be 5 months!)

Only George & HArriet living in that area in 1911 That I can see but sadly there seem to have been several Si(y)dney (George) Smith born around that time but none that jump out -- unless he was registered as just Sidney Smith

Thanks everyone! This is very helpful and confirms some of the information that I thought I had found. :P
How does one go about getting birth, marriage or death certificates if you are not sure of the information? I am really not familiar on the English areas and don't know where to begin to send for such information.

Hi Wimble

You can get certificates on line through the GRO here : https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/cert ... efault.asp and pay by credit card. It's sometimes easier than going through the local register office, as they don't always accept credit cards. Don't go through third parties such as Ancestry or you will pay way over the normal price.
