Went to Arizona a couple of years ago and there was a shop selling old photos of dead people - including children. They were horrible, but apparently this is what they did. There was a photo of the Clanceys all together after the shoot out at the OK Coral.

Most people are dressed up and have their hair done and makeup applied if they are going to be viewed at their funeral.

I don't think taking a photograph is such a ghoulish thing.

To me the body is not the person. Who and what they are has left and what remains is simply flesh and bone.

Cadavers need to be treated with respect but I personally never view a body at a funeral as that is no longer the person I want to remember.

Any film or documentary or book that may contain photographs or paintings of dead Australian Aborigines must declare this.

Australian Aborigines believe the image of the dead person to be sacred and so would be horrified at such photographs as you describe.

Wasnt it the way though? A person brought home dressed in the best , laid out in the coffin in the parlour?
My G Aunty who died a few years ago was dressed in her best, hair and make up done.
Inside her coffin had her best things. Her dog sat beside it all over the wake.
I found it a bit strange but rather comforting in an odd way.
I didnt take a photo mind!
