I'm looking for info about John W Thompson Snr b 1834 Portsmouth. He was the postmaster (1861 census) and registrar (1891 census) in Sedgley, from the other side of the world in Au it is a bit confusing trying to sort things out. I have been able to find no record of him in Portsmouth and wondered if his parents were just visiting

Being apprenticed to a Chemist/Doctor/Postmaster you might be lucky and find some trade documents -- indentures etc that will give you more info -- difficult to know whether to search Hampshire/staffordshire or somewhere in between for 1841
If that marriage is the right one it might give more info on father and his occupation -- that would help

Thanks to all who have replied.
All the details mentioned I have found. It seems a bit odd for a young lad to move from Portsmouth to Sedgley to take up an apprenticeship, so it would seem logical that his parents either came from or moved to Sedgley
I have found 2 John Thompson s b1834&1835 christened in Sedgley either or neither may be him. It is at this point that I have hit the brick wall
