NL,
I just read your story on couple who walked into Canal on a Foggy nght and picked up the Bugle From 18th of December to note full story.
My interest was raised because my grandfather John Joseph Richard Parsons drowned at exactly same spot at Windmill End in 1902 and my brother fell in at same spot in c.1990 ( survived). I also had two Canal Boat Fires at same spot in c. 1994.I wrote an article called Ghosts of the Canal for Bugle a few years back which detailed my family experiences and a number of other drownings at same locationm.
The one in latest article I did not know about but it adds to the list of strange happenings at this spot.
Miss Phyliss Chandleraged 19 of Bumble Hole and Samuel Crew aged 21 of Church Rd. Netherton and Mary Ann Wells aged 17 of Bumble Hole were people who drowned in fog of X-mas 1914 .

A distressing drowning fatality occurred at Windmill End on Christmas Eve 1914 ,when owing to the fearful fog three young people from Netherton walked into the canal and were drowned. The unfortunate victims were Miss Phyliss Chandler aged 19 of 199, Bumble Hole Road ; her sweetheart Samuel Crew aged 21 of 94 Church Road and Mary Ann Wells aged 17 of 201 Bumble Hole Road.
The girls worked in Birmingham and journeyed to Windmill End Station where they were met by Samuel and took shortest route back to Bumble Hole via the canal.
When recovered the next morning the bodies of Crew and Miss Chandler ( his Sweetheart) were locked in an embracwe asif crew had made a valiant attempt to save her.
The three were buried together with Samuel between the two girls at Netherton Parish Church
