Shrewsbury's not far from Oswestry and worth a visit.
I grew up 12 miles from Chester, on of the closest larger towns. Chester's good, especially for the shops, does get a lot of tourists though, and parking in the center is expensive, use one of the park and rides. A walk around the walls is good, and the pub down by the river used to be okay too. The rows are something unique to Chester too. Into the summer season there are quite often buskers, and also a town crier.
If you're into Stately homes, then Erddig (National Trust) is in Wrexham only 20 mins from Chester and about the same from Oswestry. Pick your day though, it may not be open all week at this time of year, and if memory serves the Chinese Room is only open one day a week at any time of year to protect the fragile wallpaper.
If you like a bargin then Cheshire Oaks at Ellesmere Port is brilliant, it's an outlet village, but it can get busy, so an early start is advised. Where are you staying Pete?

I forgot one of the obvious places
Chirk Castle (also NT I think is okay), and then if you don't mind heights then there's the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct at Froncysyllte one of Telford's engineering masterpieces. You could also take the A5 up towards Llangollen, it takes you through the Horseshoe Pass, great views.
You're also not too far from Theatre Clwyd, which does have some good plays on (and dead easy parking!), that's just a stone's throw from where I grew up.
