Hi, there is another post somewhere with this subject if you wish to browse that. Right now, I am looking ONLY for pre-1873 data. I would particularly like to find a trans-Atlantic voyage for Miles which I estimate would have been very close to 1872. I heard some whispers in the family that he might actually have been from Wales although I don't know why you would have to whisper that. I figure he needed at least a year to come over and marry a local girl!

I have nothing from England whatsoever except that he claimed in the Canadian census records that he was from England. I have no middle name and no parents. He married Ellen Alberta Redmond on 17 Jun 1873 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at a Methodist Church and had several children. In Canada, he claimed to be a boiler maker. In the 1891 census, he claimed that both his parents were born in England. Also interesting, he had a young man named Richard Davis in his household from England born about 1872. He surely could be a relative. I have several Richards in our family after that, me and my father in particular.

Would there be societies or trade documents that might identify him? Maybe somebody in the UK knows how to see the outgoing passenger lists from some of the main ports being used around 1872? It's possible he sailed to New York and subsequently came into Canada although I have not found any proof of that. Thank you for reading.

I realise that -- I was just trying to discount those who it could not be because they were still over here

We may need to go further back, as we don't know when he emigrated. I've looked on the 1861 census, but again there's nothing that stands out. Was his father mentioned on his marriage record?
