Not what I'd want on my headstone........

Just been reading the paper, and while I had to laugh at this inscription on a headstone in Gloucestershire, I can't help wondering what the poor woman had done to deserve it.
"My wife is dead, and here she lies,
nobody laughs, nobody cries.
Where she has gone or how she fares,
nobody knows and nobody cares."
Needless to say the headstone was anonymous.
Just think how much trouble there'd be if someone tried to put that on a headstone today

You would have to research her just to find out.
A lot of genealogists I know will wander through graveyards, find an interesting headstone/epitaph and then research the individual.
I suppose once you have completed your own tree to your satisfaction the bug is still there....

Not really finished but in limbo!
I find it hard to add extra bits and pieces to the 14,000 relatives I have in my tree...
I occasionally see a new set of records become available and have a look to see if there is anything that might interest me.
I think most people get to the stage where their tree is fairly static for long periods of time.
Starting a tree from scratch to solve the mystery person on the tombstone or in an article you may have read (Black Country Bugle is excellent for those!) can be quite fun.
I am sure the deceased lady with the unpleasant epitaph would be a fascinating character to explore.
She might turn out to be a saint and her husband the sinner!

I once took my grandkids to see the tombs of Matthew Boulton and James Watt in St Mary's, Handsworth and we had a walk around the graveyard. There were a couple of interesting looking graves which I took photos of and later researched the inhabitants. One of the graves was in black marble and I wondered why it had an anchor and rope. It belonged to a minister of the church and his family who I traced back to Cornwall - it turned out he was from a long line of sea-going ancestors.

My Great-grandfathers grave in Beeches Road, Cave Addullam Baptist churchyard, Blackheath, has an anchor on it. Not because he came from the coast, but because he was an anchor maker in Old Hill!
