I'm trying to find the marriage of the son of Samuel TAYLOR and Sarah SHAKESPEARE plus his wife's birth information.

His name is Charles Henry TAYLOR born 29 June 1840 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire (have birth certificate) and he 'married' Caroline MORREN/MORAN. Sandwell Record Office says it's MORREN on the birth certificate of their daughter Betsy.

The approximate date of their marriage is about 1861. I have only seen one Caroline MORREN/Charles TAYLOR marriage registration:

But not only do the page numbers differ Charles would have only been 13 years old and he was still living at home, unmarried, with his widowed mother in the 1861 census so this one can definitely be ruled out. There are no other possible marriages anywhere in the GRO indexes.

Their first daughter Sarah (Ann) TAYLOR, my 2nd great grandmother, was born about 1862 (I haven't been able to find her birth information either). Her year of birth I approximated from the age on her marriage certificate to Joseph HARVEY. She was listed as being 19 years of age in December 1881. I am in the process of ordering certificates to verify this.

I have Charles & Caroline in the census from 1871 - 1911 and all their children are listed as being born in West Bromwich.

As for Caroline I can't find her birth information either. According to the census she was born in Westmeath, IRE about 1842 - 1846 depending on which census you look at. I'm out of luck if she was actually born in those years because civil registration in Ireland didn't start until 1864. In the last two census' she said she was born in West Bromwich but I haven't been able to find a birth for her in the GRO indexes.

The next step I guess would be to check Westmeath baptisms but I'm not sure how to go about that. Unless the LDS have filmed them and I can order them into my local FHC. Will check that. She did have a brother named James MORAN who was living with Charles & Caroline in the 1901 census and someone has hinted that their parents were Orsan and Catharine but there is no proof of this.

If anyone has any information on this couple or can point me in the direction of where I should be looking I'd appreciate your help.

According to West Midlands BMD - in 1853 there is a marriage for Charles Taylor and Ann Dobson, Christchurch Oldbury and a marriage for Caroline Morren to John Higgins at West Bromwich Register Office, and like you say, this is too early anyway.

There isn't a marriage listed for Charles Taylor to a Caroline.

The only Sarah A Taylor I can see recorded in West Bromwich Local Records is in 1860 - West Bromwich South West.

Where in West Bromwich are they living on the census information you have ?

In the 1861 census Charles was living at Oldbury Road, West Bromwich.
In the 1871 census Charles, Caroline & family were living at 1, Plants Road, Shelton, Hanley, Stoke on Trent
In the 1881 census Charles, Caroline & family were living at 25, Brick House Lane, West Bromwich.

In 1871 they were all listed as just being from Staffordshire with Sarah Ann aged 8 making her year of birth 1863 so I wonder if the 1864 registration is more likely? She could have been registered late. Don't know why I didn't pick up on this before. Although we don't know where they were living before moving to Hanley. Is Oldbury Road in South West or North East in West Bromwich?

Their marriage had to be after April 7th 1861 so it narrows it down to between April 8th 1861 & 1863/4 now doesn't it? Still can't find them though.

This one is the most likely - Oldbury Road was in West Bromwich South West

Have you thought they may not have been married and that Sarah could be be this one,

I checked for marriages between a Caroline WILKES and Charles Taylor but still no luck.

Maybe they never married? Maybe their marriage was one of the ones that was 'missed' and didn't make it to the GRO? There's something about that in a couple of books entitled "Comedy of Errors". Not read the books myself but have heard they're very informative.

I'm going to check the Sarah MORAN option and try the other two Sarah's from the WMBMD site to see if that will help pin down where they were actually living when she was born.

Once I've done this I'll post the results here.
