Hi,

I've found listed in trade directories of Staffordshire, Worcestershire & Warwickshire my x3 Great Grandfather:

1851 White's Directory Staffordshire: gun-ram rod and breech pin maker (Blackheath).
1865 Jones's Mercantile Directory of The Iron District of South Staffordshire and East Worcestershire: breech pin manufactorer (Gorsty Hill).
1872 Post Office Directory Worcestershire: Smiths, Blacksmiths & Farriers: William Hadley, Gorsty Hill.
1884 Kelly's Directory, Worcestershire: William Hadley, Smith, Gorsty Hill.

Interstingly I also found this:
1884 Kelly's Directory, Worcestershire William Hadley George & Dragon 55 Halesowen Road

On the 1891 census William's son George Hadley is the Landlord of the George & Dragon pub at 55 Halesowen Road. is the William listed above his father ?

I've always assumed that William was a factory workers making theses breech pins but given the above information does this prove he was self employed and how could I find out anymore information on who he did business with etc. I think he must have worked by himself because on the census returns he's not listed as a employer so I'm thinking he maybe he had his workshop at home.

Would the person have to pay to be included in the directories ?

Any ideas would be smashing.

The William Hadley you have was licensee at the George and Dragon, 54 Halesowen Road in Oldbury from 1884 - 1886.

There is a long line of Hadley Families in the pub and brewing industry in Oldbury up to the present day. Not sure where this William fits in. I have been in touch with someone who has done a lot of work on the Hadley's of Oldbury, can't remember at the moment, but I'll try and find out. I have William Hadley in my family - licensee of The Bell in Rounds Green, Oldbury, 1889 to 1896.

Interesting information and I'm wondering if you have any idea when George Hadley took over the licensee of the George & Dragon because I found him on the 1891 census as the licensee. He seemed to have had a liking for the trade because he's listed on the 1901 census running a beer house or pub in Great Bridge Street, West Bromwich.

I'm very interested in the history of the local pubs around the Black Country but sadly I have very little research material and if you could recommend any interesting books etc I could buy that would be fantastic.

It seems the Hadley family from around the Black Country seemed to have been involved within the Pub trade for many years and from my Halesowen book there is listed a transaction of the Crown inn in 1584 from Kenelm Hidley (I think was Hadley). The Hadleys also seemed to have been shopkeepers and I've found them on census returns runnung shops around Halesowen and Rowley Regis area.

Looking at the IGI you findThe Hadley surname dating back many many years (16th century) around the Halesowen and Rowley Regis area.

Ian Hadley is the guy I was talking to a couple of years ago - I will PM you his e mail address. Famous Hadley pub in Oldbury was Pop Hadleys, can't remember the proper name but they pulled it down when they built Savacentre.

Here are a few dates and pubs in West Bromwich were George Hadley was the licensee

1912 - 1915 - Coach and Horses, Ryders Green Road, West Bromwich
1944 - 1948 - Dunkirk, Whitehall Road, Greets Green
C 1933 - Eagle Tavern, Greets Green,
1896 - 1910 - Old Forge, Great Bridge Street
