When exactly did mothers' maiden names start going on Birth Certificates? Life would be a lot easier if they had always been there!

I think they have always been on the birth certificates since certificates came in in 1837 but they only started being put on the index in 1915 and that is when they show up on a search which as you say makes life much easier.

The mother's maiden name on births and the spouses name on marriages has always been on certificates but for searching, it started in September Qtr 1911.

It always depended on the church and the minister what information went on Baptisms. Very rarely was the mother's maiden name added.

On church registers the maiden name will be found far more often on non-conformist and Roman Catholic registers than Anglican.
Church Of Ireland are pretty good as well.
