I need a birth certificate of my gg grandfather. He is here on the 1881 census living with his in laws:

I have his marriage certificate from 1878, and can trace him in all the census's 81/91/01-1911. However I can not find any record for his birth which would be around 1850/52. It states on his marriage cert that the fathers name is Edward. What info do I need to be able to order his birth certificate?

Yep I think that is him. I know he was born in Northumberland and the birth date is in the right area. However, I haven;t been able to find a birth in northumberland for that year!

Is this his elder brother?

As I understand it FMP and Ancestry both work from the General Record office records -- there were some instances when the records didn't get that far.

Well, this looks really promising. However, where do i obtain the information to order a certificate? Also, if I order a birth certificate for Robert Tondale/Tindale/Tindall I'm not entirely sure that it is going to tell me any more than i already know. It still won't make a concrete link between the above robert and this one (below) who i know for definate is my great grandfather:

A birth certificate may well give you more information or it may just verify the information you already have.
If you can't find a birth, there could be a few reasons for this. Ancestry and FMP have indexes which have been put together by either their own employees or volunteers and although are more or less complete, there could be cases where individual records have been missed off or mistranscribed. A good way to check this is on Ancestry to open up the birth indexes and instead of putting in a search, to to the browse box on the right hand side of your screen. Choose a year and then a quarter and the first letter of the name and search that way. It is long winded, but I have found it very useful.

There are two records for each birth, marriage and death. A local one and a national one. The local one is taken where the event was registered and then sent off to the national records. Sometimes, the records didn't make it to the national office, so you could try contacting the local office and ask them to check.

Something else to remember is that although registration started in 1837, it didn't carry a penalty if you didn'tregister a child until the 1870s, so there is a chance that your relative's birth was never registered.

I think this may be the case as I can find nothing for births for 1852!
