*Archive?* Barking up the wrong tree?

Hi again,

I'm sorry for picking your collective brain so frequently but I think I'm barking up the wrong tree. It isn't helped that I'm trying to climb the tree of one of the most common surnames... EVANS!!! How fun!? I know ultimately I'll have to order certs but until that point comes I've been locating census transcriptions.

The person I'm looking at is my gggrandfather, Richard Maurice EVANS. He was born ABT 1865 in Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. I've yet to locate a matching birth in the BMD.
He married a Rebecca around 1888 although I can't locate a marriage yet either. 1911 Census said they'd been married 23 years so I know it can give or take a few.

Now, I thought this was him in 1871 & 1881.

1871 Blaen y Waun, Ffestiniog, Merionethshire

Evan, Head, ABT 1844, Slate Quarrier, Merionethshire
Grace, Wife, ABT 1844, Merionethshire
Jane, Daughter, ABT 1863, Scholar, Merionethshire
Richd, Son, ABT 1866, Scholar, Merionethshire
Margaret, Daughter, ABT 1869, Merionethshire

1881 1 Blaen y Waun, Ffestiniog, Merionethshire

Evan Evans, Head, ABT 1844, Quarryman, Corris Merionethshire
Grace Evans, Wife, ABT 1844, Festiniog Merionethshire
Richard Evans, Son, ABT 1866, Quarryman Festiniog Merionethshire
Margaret Evans, Daughter, ABT 1869, Domestic, Festiniog Merionethshire
Sarah A Evans, Daughter, ABT 1872, Scholar, Festiniog Merionethshire
Evan Evans, Son, ABT 1876, Festiniog Merionethshire
William O Evans, Son, ABT 1881, Festiniog Merionethshire

Now, it looks plausible and possible. :)

But in 1891 when Richard is married to Rebecca and living in South Wales. I found the family above here with Richard still there...

Cwm Celyn, Green Bank, Bettws Y Coed, Denbighshire

Evan, Head, ABT 1844, Quarryman Slate, Festiniog Merionethshire
Grace, Wife, ABT 1844, Festiniog Merionethshire
Richard, Son, ABT1866, Quarryman, Festiniog Merionethshire
Jane, Daughter, aBT 1863, Festiniog Merionethshire
Margaret, Daughter, abt1869, Festiniog Merionethshire
Evan, Son, abt1877, Farm Labourer, Festiniog Merionethshire
Owen, Son, abt1885, Scholar, Festiniog Merionethshire
Grace Ellen, Daughter, abt1883, Scholar, Festiniog Merionethshire
Martha, Daughter, ABT 1888, Festiniog Merionethshire

I think I've already made up my mind but I'd just like you all to tell me I've climbed to wrong tree.

Beth

Know one can tell you who your family are Beth, you have to decide that for yourself. Farside found a possible marriage in 1889, which would fit for being Married 23 years in 1911. I think you need to send for some birth and the marriage certificate before you can say for sure. Linell.

It is possible for all sorts of reasons for people to be recorded twice -- eg in this case if the informant misunderstood and gave the names of all the children in the family rather than just those who were staying there that night.

As Linell says " I think you have got to the point where you need some of the certificates" -- the unknown question is which ones will fill the missing links most effectively.

One though -- have you found any baptisms? they can be one way of linking siblings to a set of parents.

I believe that's my Auntie's tree, because I've been looking at it.. but I didn't want to follow her tree for obvious reasons. :) I'm trying not to take anything for granted because I can't find Laura and Evan with Richard.

This is where I've been having the problem. He's on the 1911 as Richard Maurice, I've been wondering whether Maurice is a family name (possibly Morris).

I have the marriage of Edward Evans, which names his father as Richard so I know I'm looking for the right name.

Thanks Linell, I know nobody can tell me who my family are, I just needed a little confirmation that I've barked up the wrong tree (I'd already decided).

Mathsgirl, I didn't know that sometimes people were recorded twice. (interesting!) I haven't found any baptism's as I don't have access to Parish Records atm. And Merioneth is a 3hr drive so a week there is in order. ;)

So on that note, I'm going to put my precious Evans' to one side until my bank balance looks a little healthier... I love my paternal line.. Bruce's, Evans', Hughes' and Hodges'. The only one's I seem to be having any great success with are the Bruce's, I currently have them from the 1700's albeit I haven't confirmed all the info but a week in Northampton will hopefully happen this year.

Thank you for all your help and advice, FarSide, Linell and Mathsgirl. I'm going to make a list of certificates that need ordering now. :)

Good luck with the research Beth, I suppose you have tried the IGI for baptisms? Maths Girl is correct, I have found some of mine on the Census twice :!: Linell.

Hi Linell, is the IGI the one on familysearch? If so, I have tried it.. If not then no I probably haven't.

Looking at it with fresh eyes this morning has made it all a little more clear though...

Yes it is on the LDS Family Seach site. Probably all a bit early for your dates. As you say you need to search the Parish Records, happy hunting from Linell.
