Good Evening everyone..

Just a quick question.
I plan to visit my local records office in the not so distant future.

How do you prepare for a visit?
I have a fair few names/families I want to look up but I just don't know how to take it all with me. Do you just write the names/rough date of birth/parents/rough date of death etc.? Or do you go into anymore detail?

You need to check that you have the correct identification needed for being allowed in -- check the website or phone before you go.

Some record offices let you take a laptop in others --insist on just pencil and paper -- others I have been to have been in between.

I would take the info you suggest + if possible a rough tree of how they fit together / family groups

It is also worth noting any gaps in families of more than 2 years because it is sometimes possible to find children baptised between the ones that have appeared in one census and then died before the next one.

It is very easy to get distracted in a record office and time goes very quickly! so be prepared to make notes of other things to follow up on a later occasion
