My great-grandmother Selina Valentine

My grandfather - Sidney Charles Valentine - according to his birth certificate, was born on the 1st July 1874. The name of father was Charles Valentine and the name of mother was Selina Valentine - formerly Valentine.

Sidney married my grandmother Winifred Foster in 1901. The marriage certificate states his father as Sidney Valentine deceased.

I think I am right in assuming that Selina and Charles did not marry and that Sidney was illegitimate. This would have been a stigma back in 1874, and Selina would have kept very quiet about this part of her life. In both the 1881 and 1891 census she had declared herself as a widow. She probably told Sidney that his father had died and she had named him after him (so he had thought this to be Sidney)?

I have drawn a blank at this point as I am unable to find a link between Selina and Charles. I have tried BMDs with no clues. Is this the end of the line on this part of my tree :?:

Post the addresses where they lived, were born etc, and any additional info, it might be a case of not seeing the wood for the trees!!

Margaret do you have Selina on the Census as a young woman, was she born with the name Valentine, or did she just call herself that, and would have had no connection to Charles other than amour?

Margaret do you know if Selina's Parents died, is that why she was bought up by Relations? Do you know when and where Charles was born :?:
