Can anyone advise me where to look for more about my gg grandfather

OK here's what I already Know

Name,  Henry Thompson don't know his birth but it could have been about 1825
In the Greenwich area

Married don't know where or when to, Julia Bogue born abt 1830 Cork Ireland
They had three children
1859, Fredric Henry Thompson (later became Henry Fredrick Thompson)
1861, Julia Thompson born in Lewisham (I have her Birth cert)
1864, James Thompson born in (Sandy Bedfordshire, 1871 census) all other census Greenwich

Now the 1861 census Julia states that "He doesn't live here anymore"

1861, On Julia Thompson (junior) Birth cert (Father, Henry Thompson Master Mariner)

1871 census Julia Thompson (widow)

1880 Fredric Henry Thompson (later became Henry Fredrick Thompson) married

Jane Eliza Aunger
on the marriage cert it states (Father, Henry Thompson Captain Merchant Service, Deceased)

I would like to find out more, but where do I look
As I can't find any more birth certs, or marriage certs
Any suggestions?

Try The National Archives advanced search and select "Merchant Shipping and seamen" and "Transport and communications".

There are three Henry Thompsons listed as Master or Mate (Foreign Trade) in the 1861 edition of the Mercantile Navy List.
Their certificate numbers are
488
9116
14204
Plus Henry Hall Thompson 15439
There are none listed in the Passenger ship Home Trade registers.

So how do you know which one is yours? If any.

To search for clues you need to go to the National Archive at Kew and look at the following series .

It would also be advantagious to look at Lloyds Captains Registers held by London Metropolitan Archive.
Both institutions have Research services but these can be costly and you can never be 100% certain they will find the correct person. I would recommend a personal visit.

Thank you SO much for your helpful replies I believe that Henry Thompson 488 is our Henry. The surprising thing is that his entry states that he was born in 1814. We didn't have a birth for him but was looking around 1830. Thanks once again YOUR BRILLIANT
