Hello,
My name is Bob Leathers. I live in Casper, Wyoming, USA. I am excited about joining this forum in hopes of meeting some new people online and leaning more about my ancestors and the area in which they came from.
I am interested in the While (Netherton), Roberts (Netherton, Dudley), Hadley (West Bromwich) and Cox (Netherton, Dudley) families. Part of each family moved directly from Netherton, Dudley, Worcestershire, England to Carbon, Carbon, Wyoming, USA between 1880 and 1885. Some stayed in England. They were coal miners in England and coal miners in America.
We are scheduled to visit England in July of 2011, in particular the Netherton, Dudley and West Bromwich area in which my ancestors came from. We are tentatively looking at July 17-24. We plan to fly into Birmingham, rent a car, stay in B&B and spend a week visiting the area. I hope the forum is able give us some visitor information to help make our trip more beneficial.
Is this a good time of year to visit the area? Is there a better time? Where do we go for records?
How do I go about finding where family members might be buried? What places should we visit?

Yes any help you need just ask.
As Snoops says Black Country Living Museum is a must.
If you wish to visit the archvies at Dudley let me know in a pm will
meet you there and give you a hand.

Di came over last year and I am sure she can help with where to stay bits
depends where you are going to visit.
Nice hotel in Dudley called the Village, there is the Mount Hotel in Wolverhampton.
You got to go to Ma Pardoes the famous pub in Netherton, Then there are all
the little villages round about. Rowley Regis, Old hill etc.

Dennis are you about....what do you recommend and where?

Do you want to have a look at that Black Country History section too Bob,
some ideas there of things to visit.

Folks what do you recommend Bobs sees on his visit over here.

Hi Bob welcome to the forum

We stayed at the Best Western in Ironbridge last year(might be a bit far away from the Black Country for you) lovely hotel, great food (evening and breakfast), only down side is there's no elevator - but they did offer to take our luggage up. There are loads of good museums in Ironbridge too!

I haven't been to Blist hill yet but must go this year
Ironbridge is fabulous and Much Wenlock well worth a visit.

We might even be able to arrange a pub in the BC area to all meet up in the summer too!

Bob you need to give us your BC names, Census details, then we can tell you where to go and where to stay. Dudley is the centre of the BC, as NL said, 'The Village' is the best place to stay, you can visit 'The Black Country Museum' and 'Dudley Castle' that is in the process of being renovated. The BC has a whole network of Canals, you can have a tour on a Narrow Boat, which will take you round Dudley and Netherton, through the Lime Stone Caves. Rowley Regis has a wealth of history, St Giles Church and the Rowley Hills. Dudley also has St Thomas and St Edmunds Churches, there are a few Museums dotted around such as the 'Glass House' at Kingswinford and 'Red House' at Stourbridge. Dudley Archives would be a must, but you need to go there with a comprehensive list of what you want to find. Will be easier if we know exactly where your Ancestors lived. Do be prepared though a lot of the old buildings and streets have gone, and parts of the BC are very run down, not for the feint hearted. HTH from Linell.
