I read the link that Linell put on and i saw again the note that the area between Pencricket Lane and Ashes Road is known locally as "The Billies" .
When i was a kid late 50's early 60's we would occasionally play football on there against the lads from Ashes Road and we would ride our tracker bikes up and down the small hills but i can't recall anyone ever calling it " The Billies".
I'm curious i suppose when this term came into existence and why. Can you shed any light on this important matter?

yes i used to play on there in the 70s and we called it the billies maybe its wasa local term for the spoil heaps from the pit on ashes rd
the chemical spoil heaps nr oldbury were called the blue billies may be the billies was the slang for spoil heap
there used to be a coal mine on the site of causeway green infants school too

nope still cannot find the causeway gren info

there used to be a marl hole where cakemore fields are now
and top of those fields was a field with horses in called the cow field
and if you went over the motorway footbridge and turned left you came to an area we called the swamp
past wot loked like floors of old factories and finally ended up at hurst green park

I wonder what old factory that would have been?
I lived on the Cakemore Estate pre Motorway and i went up there last year for the first time in over 40 years and our play grounds were gone!! I lived there when after our house was just fields all the way to The Essoldo and Quinton Church and Blue Bell Dell!!

Hi CB, I asked that question of a distant relative who came from the area but now lives in Perth, Australia
This is his reply...

"After consulting dad about Ashes Road he says that ashes road was named after one of the coal mine waste dumps that caught fire and burned for years causing tons of ashes that were used in road construction, if my memory serves me right there was a photograph and small article about it in the Black Country Bugle"

cheers mate also done some digging and found out that the pit that was on the school site was called long meadow colliery the pit hada nearby brickworks too

dont suppose you could find me the article please
