Are you sure you are onto the right Henry Clift -- there were two or three more recorded in the area in 1851 !

Clarence Clift was my Grandfather's best friend they were Royal Marine Medics together in WW1 and were both members of the Young Mens Class at Cradley Wesleyan Chapel. I found these notes on the family:-

Simeon Dunn's father in law HENRY CLIFT 1837 - 1928 had been Sunday School Superintendent, he was also a trustee, Society Steward and Class Leader. Henry was involved with Thomas Crowther in setting up the Ragged School attached to the Wesleyan Chapel at Bank Street Brierley Hill. Henry became Vice President of the Cradley Heath Sunday School Union. His son Samuel Clift and Grandson Clarence Clift both followed him in taking on the Superintendency of the Sunday School. Outside the Church Henry Clift was a member of Cradley Parish Council and Assistant Overseer for Cradley. Most of his working life was spent as a Chainmaker for Wm Griffin and Sons Ltd.

the Weslyan bit certainly fits with Samuel being a local Preacher 1891 -- I'm a bit confused by the chainmaker bit for Henry as the one we are following seems to have put down a variety of occupations but not actually chainmaker!

That's what the books says MG, 'most of his working life' perhaps that was the author's perception It seems to be the right Henry, will have a better look tomorrow, it is past my bed time. Many thanks from Linell.
