Hello,
I am Kate Jackson. I have been interested in family history since a small child, as my family has a strong and long tradition of telling stories of past family members. I inherited my nan's lally box (like a security box) full of certificates, photos, mementos and christening cards. As a child my nan allowed me to look through these items and ask questions about who 'so and so' was.
My great aunt Lylie kept a family tree based on information she had been able to gleam off family members I no longer have access to. I was given a copy of this and thus sparked my interests.
Since i have had the internet i have been online searching. I have developed the tree and as yet feel proud that i have not been shocked by any finding so far.
I have renewed my subscription with Find My Past and am back on the hunt. Although i do use it to look up buildings too, in my spare moments for people i use the resources to look up the past of their homes.

I have about 4 family names that are important to me: French (my Nan's maiden name) Jackson (my Nan's married name) Ferridge (my great grandmothers maiden name) and Litchfield (my great great grandmothers maiden name).

The FRENCH family were located in and around the Poplar area, the JACKSON & FERRIDGE from Lambeth, the LITCHFIELD Woburn.

Looking forward to chatting to you.

Hi Kate
Welcome to the forum.
Wow - you're lucky to have inherited a box like that - my aunt has all my paternal granmothers papers, and my maternal grandmother was no good at saving things.

Hi Kate
My surname is Jackson too - although my Jacksons are from Lincolshire

Not sure if you could direct me to find out some information?

I have family who were born and lived in the Margate area on my mothers side, Garlinge being of a particular interest to me, I have been trying to locate Horne cottages in Garlinge without much success, where my great grandparents / grandparents lived, and my mother was born. Do you know how I might find out where these cottages were? any help advice greatly appreciated
Regards Linda

Hello Linda
As for the Jackson name is is actually a northern name. This is why i have an interest in the Southern / London based Jacksons. I actually had something posted through my door about a year ago about some local (Thanet) Jackson's (but were not connected to me in anyway and assumed it was n error) i will see if i can dig it out and see if it has a connection to your family.

As for information on the Cottages, as a member of the Historical Society I would recommend contacting them to do some leg work for you. A donation to the society is normal practice to cover any costs but otherwise the work is all done by volunteers and enthusiasts. http://margatehistory.blogspot.com/ or margatehistoricalsociety@yahoo.co.uk

I have had a quick look on FMP and the 1911 census and there are records for the Cottages so i think there's a good chance Margate HS will be able to find out some information.

Hope that helps.
Kate
