Ganymede

HMS Ganymede is shown in all my readings to have been broken up in 1838. I have a relative, Royal Atkins, who was sentenced in 14 October 1839 and transferred from Coventry Gaol to the Ganymede on 30 October 1839. Has anybody got an explanation how this could be if it was broken up in 1838 - at least one year earlier . Ausmurf

HMS Ganymede was a Prison Hulk, maybe by 1839 they had commissioned another Ganymede, most ships such as the Ark Royal which my husband was on, were re-commissioned every 20 years or so, replaced by a new one. Linell.

IF one Ganymede is decommed in 1838 it makes sense that another ship adopts that name in 1839.
