WW2 medals

I've been trying to put a commemorative montage together for my wife's grandfather, now deceased, who served in WW2.

I know he was Mentioned In Distatches for achievements in the Mediteraenean Theatre, but he sold all of his medals after he was demobed to help raise money his children. I have a rough idea what medals he's likely to have been awarded, but would like to make sure so I can re-coup duplicates and include them with what I put together.

Is there an on-line (cheap or preferably free) search facility where I can find out for sure what medals he was awaded? Or do I need to go to Kew?

Many thanks!!

Andy

<EDIT> Sorry, I've just realised that this should be in the Military bit!!

Hi Loakesy,

War medal index cards are avaible on the National Archives web site-just index cards and several soldiers per card so don't get confused

Thanks Carol. I'll have a browse. I guess the index cards lead to the TNA paper/fiche archive though, do they?

Hi Andy, Apologies-I hope I haven't sent you on a wild goose chase. I remembered incorrectly but the info I found was on Ancestry not National Archives. Here is s a link to the the ww1 medals list-hope you can find it from here

Not sure where the cards lead to as I haven't followed it up

This might be more help

Thanks Carol. I couldn't find what you suggested on TNA website. I can't seem to find WW2 medals though. I guess I'm going to pay a visit...!!
