Emergency email con-trick

I just got an email "from" some one who I was in contact with a few years ago (when we were doing the Woodhouse connection, NL). He is, apparently, stranded in Spain with his family, after being robbed. Luckily they kept their passports but need money to get home.
Hm, how likley is that to be true?
Anyone else get it?

Strange that he lost everything else, but still has your e-mail address. If he had a valid plane ticket, then he can get this re-issued.
If this is genuine, wouldn't the British Embassy help out? Wouldn't you think he'd have some friends/relatives he could contact?
I'd be very wary of this. It may be someone using his mail account, or he may be a con artist himself.

I'm sure it is not from him and have no intention of replying at all!
The English is not bad but not written my a 50+ man from England. I doubt he would want money transferred via Western Union, more likley Barclay's!
So even if he is "writing it with tears in his eyes" he won't get a penny from me

NL - good for you! I almost did that too

if he got a passport the british embassy would get him home and bill him on his return, so its a con and in the bin

I agree with everyone else, if he has his passport the British Embassy will be able to get him home. Failing that, his insurance company should be able to help out as well. Especially in regard to the lack of money.
Sounds as though his email may have been hacked, and they've used the possible familial connection as a way of getting some cash out of people. Such a shame that something as noble as genealogy can lead some people to see it as a goldmine.

Yeah I got your PM about the issues you've had recently. Don't worry, I sent you the amount you asked for, plus a little extra just in case. Hope everything works out fine :p

I had one a bit like that a while ago.
His email had been hijacked.
But made me so worried at first !
I cant understand people doing this.
Have a good time Peter! Cant you stick me in your bag and take me with you?
Could do with a holiday!
