Hi, I am new to this forum so not so sure how to go about getting around it yet. So here goes......
My grandmother was Mary Layton(1888) born in Haley Green Halesowen, she was the last of the Halesowen line (except for Aunt Edith)in our branch. I am trying to get information about her life in Halesowen. She had a brother who was the undermanager of a "steelworks" in the area. At present it is this that i am focusing on. She had 4 brothers that i can find. Thomas (1893), then William, Arthur and George. She also had 3 sisters, Annie, Elsie and Lily. I think it possibly would have been Tom as the others were too young, and Arthur was killed in Flanders. I would love to find out what steelworks and get information about it. Any information about any Laytons would be appreciated
Hope someone can help.

Yes, i remember my grandmother telling me her brother was an undermanager in "the steelworks". As a child i assumed there was only one steelworks (i live in Australia).
Siblings were Thomas Layton
1893
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Stourbridge
County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire
He married Lily Field in 1915 again Stourbridge County etc as above.
They had 2 children that i am aware of Alice Lilian born 1915
And Thomas born 1920
Arthur was born 1896, and died in Flanders 1916. Never married that i am aware.
William born 1898 Wife Winnie, unsure of any other details.
George born 1907 married Beatrice Wright in 1928.
I assume Tom was the brother that was at the steelworks, because of his age. My grandmother mentioned him dearly.
Mind i would love any information on any of them, but i want to find out what steelworks too. My grandfather also worked at the steelworks and that is how my grandmother met him.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Carole

Yes Carole relates to Raymond
So do we have this 2nd marriage for Mary Layton now Hackett
and a death for Sidney?
Mary married Frank Nathaniel Wiggins?
so are they on the 1911
does it maybe say where he works?

I don't like to put a damper on Carol's quest, but there were literally dozens of Steel Works in and around Halesowen. At a guess I would think it could have been Stewarts and Lloyds up Combs Hill, where my Grandfather worked, sadly it is no longer there. I would imagine that Dudley Archives have a lot of documentation on S&L though, thousands of people must have worked there over the years. HTH from Linell.

There was also the Tube Works owned by Frank and or Seth Somers at the bottom of Mucklows Hill, that was near Bromsgrove Street, near the Shenstone Pub and Roundabout. Linell.

Hey wow, How quick do you guys go.
I didn't think i'd have any answers for days.
Yes it is the same Laytons as Raymond Horsey was/is researching.
Due to all this already being done i am concentrating on their lives.
The story as i know it from my mum was Mary Layton Hackett had already separated from Sidney.
She had gone home to parents with daughter Edith.
Marys brother brought Frank home for occasional meals as he was a foreigner and on his own.
They fell in love (and pregnant)
Ran away to Australia in 1915... they later married in Canada in 1924.
My mum was born in Australia Jan 1916.
Thanks heaps again
Carole
