Well, today I'm celebrating finding out my real grandfather's name - I got my father's original (before my grandmother had tried to hide her tracks lol) birth certificate in the post this morning........

George Edward WALTERs, coal merchants traveller.

I thought she told me years ago that he was Irish, but I can only find two possibles (in the 1911 census) using that information ( and they are in Wales of all places)......

Of course if he was Irish, he might not have been here yet....

I think I need to think about it for a few more days!

Looking forward to any ideas anyone might have....

Guinevere

Take it with a 'pinch of salt' where they said they came from.
My Grandfather(on my mothers side) always insisted that his
father came from Wales.....I have traced them back to the 1790s
and low and behold they were born in Bushbury,Wolverhampton!
and what was my Great Grandfathers occupation: Commercial
Traveller....Nuff Sed.

Thanks everyone for your welcome!

"Pinch of salt" is about right - I'm keeping my options open!

The problem I think I will have is the timeframe. Firstly, I have no idea about how old he would have been at the time.....

Secondly, I think I would get more information from the 1921 census - but I don't think I can wait that long!

Thirdly, I would get even more information from the 1931 census - if it existed lol....

So, not much to go on atm. A lot of migration going on around the country at that time...maybe not for coalmen (which I think is what's meant by "Coal Merchant Traveller"!) I would have liked to see the house where they were living, but the street appears to have been knocked down (the place is Pendleton, Lancs). I guess maybe electoral rolls from that time?
