Hi Everyone

Trying to find out more about my 2nd great grandfather William Powell (b. 1838 in Rowley Regis). I've found census material for him (1841-1891) and I suspect his wife was Sarah Wakeman (b. 1831 in Bromsgrove). I have a marriage date of 1856 at St Giles' but I'm not totally certain if she is the right person. Can anyone confirm or indeed help with any further info about the family. I've come to a total dead end on this one!

Best wishes and many thanks!

Phil (philmex1)

Can you give us one of the census to give a bit more detail on William as a search produces several possibilities based on birthdate and name alone

peterd, you're right - this is the guy. I'll upload a census page so you've got some more info, Mathsgirl. Thanks for your help!

Sorry phil removed census image as poss breach of copyright, Pete
you may type out what in the census as long as it altered ie leave something out like head, daug, england, male/female, then your not breaching copyright as you have not copied it word for word

With that many census and no obvious link to Wakeman's I think the only option is to buy a birth certificate for one of the children and see Sarah's maiden name from that -- I suppose there is an outside chance there is more detail in a Baptism record!!

We seem to have got to the same conclusion so I think a birth certificate of one of the children to find mother's maiden name is the next step.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions! I think I'll order my great grandmother's birth certificate - that should certainly help a lot. I'll just have to make sure that I choose the correct Mary Ann Powell!

Phil you can order it from the local archives and say you only want it if mother is such and such and father so and so

So they normally do a sweep 2years either side of a date
and Dudley or Sandwell are excellent
really really good staff

they will let you know if they have a likely one before you part with any cash

if you dont have the emails email me and I will give you the email
I have never met such helpful regis offices and I drive em bonkers!
