I am story weaving time -- it is late at night -- Jane was in the "family way" before Benjamin married her -- was Victoria his? we will probably never know as he is almost certainly given as the father on her birth certificate.

Father Benjamin Snr did not approve -- he is a Lay Preacher at Primitive Methodists (very strict) note where he puts Jane on the census form in 1851 only just above the servants and below his own daughter's not where you would expect the wife of his first son!
