Just wanted to say hi to everyone.

Hi Kingfisher

I started a week ago!

My 2 most used sites are freebmd and familysearch.org

That should give you a starting point!

Hi Kingfisher

Welcome to the forum.

Best starting point is talking to family and jotting down what you already think you know eg births, marriages, deaths and then aim to find the evidence to make you sure.

Second Piece of advice -- keep asking -- there is no such thing as a silly question -- we all started once!

Happy Hunting

checkout old family bible, letters , postcard, and photographs might be something written on the back or a photographer address so could give you an area where to search

Thanks Guys. Strangely enough I inherited a large family tree already setup (on alot of frayed paper at least). Much of what I am going to do at the start is to copy that down. Then I will need to start checking whether it can be confirmed of course.

Much work to do and not enough hours in the day.... ho hum!

Suggestion

Rather than copy what about doing some searching and see if you come to the same conclusions -- that way you will open yourself up to possiblities that might not have been spotted by the previous explorer.

I know how easy it is to be fooled by wrong working -- I often find I don't spot mistakes that pupils have made because their working seems so plausible I make the same mistakes -- If I have previously worked through the questions my mind is not drawn by their thinking.

It will also give you some experience of searching for the unknown in the near past before getting on to the earlier years which tend to be more difficult.

Certainly never enough hours in the day once you are hooked. I have to make sure I don't get involved during term time or marking doesn't get done! --
