It is very simple Lin!!
Listen the final episode revealed s that the Ashes to Ashes world is a kind of limbo for "restless dead" police officers !!
Gene, Ray, Chris, and Shaz are all dead and Alex herself has also died. This is demonstrated by them walking to 'the light' that is signified by the Railway Arms. All except Gene "move on" but he(Gene) takes it upon himself to act as a sort Shepherd to all of his officers, helping them towards the time to go into The Railway Arms (their euphemism of Heaven). At the very end a newly dead officer arrives, demanding his iPhone (implying that he is from 2007 or later) and asking where his office has gone!!
Gene himself got killed on Coronation Day 1953.
A great ending to a great series don't you think? Keeley Hawes hmmm.Oh sorry is that sexist?

Best Wishes from Lin.

The body found in Lancs, the scarecrow you mean, was Gene Hunt's!! I think it was his police number.
Simple Minds!!

Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me
Will you stand above me
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling
Rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling
Rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Well there was me thinking how eloquently Roberto explained the last episode and gues what................ he googled it, practically word for word  You've really gone down in my estimation Roberto.

Jim Keats was the devil Lin, the body in the field was Gene Hunt with his police number and Sam Tyler was a detective in the first series "Life on Mars" who also went back in time like Alex Drake.

No it's not sexist Roberto, Keeley Hawes is attractive and Philip Glennister is hmmmmmm.

But he did go to the pub Northern Lassie.
That bit about unintentionally driving his car into a river while in pursuit of a suspect, from which his body was never recovered was a cover up and he did take up Gene's offer of going "to the pub" - accepting his death in the real world, and moving on from his life in the past.
How about that Barbara Carol?
