Hi

I wondered if someone could help me find a relative that goes missing after the 1891 census.

The relative is Edward Archer Turner b. 1880 Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.
Father - Thomas George Turner b. 1855 Bedfordshire - Machinist and Balcksmith
Mother - Sarah T Turner b. 1847 Cambridge

There appears to be census records in 1881 and 1891 but there are no records following this.

He married Doris Bickford Wilkes in 1927 in St Pancras at the age of 46. Doris died in 1928 at the age of 23. She died in Averham in Nottingham but i have no records that Doris and Edward lived together in Nottingham. They lived in Disbury, Manchester when their son was born in 1927 but there are no records currently about where they were.

The story is that he was in the army but i am not so sure as he was a journey man as a heating engineer so i believe this means that he travelled the country for work and being trained by masters of engineering. However as he disappears off the census records maybe he was in the army!
If any one can help or point me in the right direction to locate further information on Edward i would appreciate it.

Cheers
Angie

Hi Angie

I can't see him in 1901 either but I did notice that his mother is probably not Sarah as you state. Judging by the 1881 census his mother was Susan born Henlow abt 1847. Thomas George Turner must have married Sarah after that and she was probably previously married as there are step children with surname Carter in the 1891 census.

Checked the passenger records leaving the UK...no luck.
Checked 1911 census...no luck.

At this stage I would say he was in the armed services.

FindMyPast have the 1900-1913 Chelsea Pension Records (Army) being released early in June.

Probably you will find him there if he signed up for the usual 12 year stint.

Thank you both

I found the census details for Edward individually on Genes reunited website. There wasnt any details of the household just him. That's the only place i can find details of 1901.

I found some details on the libary access to Ancestry but i am not sure that it is full access and i dont have access at home.

I will look at the army pension details once they are availbale

Your help is much appreciated

Angie

HI Annie

The libary access didnt give me this much information.
This makes more sense than the army to me as i think he was a journey man learning to be a butcher so he would move round.

i know that he married my great grandma in 1927 at the age of 46 in St Pancras but i just cant find much about him up to this date

Thanks again
Ange

Ladies

I agree i dont think the information from 1901 is correct with Edward ATurner as a boarder. This doesn't seem to match the other info.

His father was THomas George Turner so the details of 1901 with Sarah and family is correct. I did get it wrong in my first note as i was doing it from memory and yes Susan was the mother of Edward.

I still dont know what happened to Edward Archer Turner though, he was my great grandfather. He married in 1927 when my grandfather was 1 and then his wife Doris turner died in Averham Nottingham in Dec 1928. My grandfather then stayed with Doris' mother and as the story has it Edward went to live back in London. I dont know if this is correct or not, but my grandfather didnt see him again and was brought up by his grandfather.

I cant find any details on Edward from the point that Doris died. It appears that they moved round as they married in St Pancras, their son (my grandfather) was born in Disbury Manchester and then Doris died in Averham Nottingham.

i cant find out why apart from that Edward is registered as a journey man on one document i have. I have assumed that this could mean that he travelled while he was training. But i cant find any information at all

thanks for your help it is much appreacited

Angie

Hi Angie, a Journeyman was an Apprentice, so he was an Apprentice Butcher. You could look for him in the 1940 Kelly's Directory under Butchers, try where you think he lived first.

HTH from Linell.

Journeyman, A tradesman who has served his trade apprenticeship and mastered his craft, not bound to serve a master, but originally hired by the day. The name derives from the French for day - jour. Also Engineer Journeyman.
