*Arc tbc* ----Family Connections for Toy/Toye

Is it quite possible that 2 families with distinctive names living in the same district and not be related?

My family name I am researching is Toy, and I have managed to track them down to these places:

Stourbridge, Quinton, Ridgacre, Halesowen,

Now I'm not sure if these towns were the same place back in the mid 1800's - but I am finding multiple Toy's in that area that are not directly linked to my researched family.

Basically I am trying to find a father for William Toy b 1796 - but while I was looking I was coming up with Toy's born in 1840 in Stourbridge, which I never had + a William Toy b 1788 who obviously too young to be a father to my William, but he may have been a cousin or an uncle, as it's unlikely that a family will name 2 children by the same name.

If my family name was Jones then clearly I would have a cataclysmic nightmare - but Toy is not a very common name.

so on the marriage of William and Eliza father is a blacksmith
so that could be his father b abt 1793

Jimmy has flagged the LDS site
on another thread you have re pre 1841 census
do you know of that site?

Just wondered who this William and Sarah are
there is a marriage in 1836 for a William Toy and Sarah

Is this the lot we had as Tay/Taye on another thread? or not?

On the 1841 both William Toy younger and Elder with Sarah are still at Crock Street

Hi Nick
I'm not sure if this has been suggested before or not...

there is a site which allows you to search for submitted records in the IGI, parish by parish. It can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ughwallis/

If you have an idea of which parishes the Toy family can be found in then you can look and see if there are more entries there.

If you have the time to click through and see who the parents were for each baptism then you can put together family groups with parents and children. This gives an idea of how many families lived in that area and sometimes allows you to sort out naming patterns. For more common names I've sometimes put the names on a spreadsheet so that I could colour code the patterns I saw. You may find that the Toy-s are all related at some point but it could be way back in time.

I helped a group sorting out the Marsden family in Derbyshire, they all seemed to come from one or two men in the 16th C but by the 19th C some were well off business men and others were poor agricultural workers and had no connection with each other.

Just a quick look at Halesowen has a Wareing Toy and a Job Toy - bet they would be easy to pick up if used as names by different generations.

The same site also has a search facility for surnames as middle names - that can be useful to use for unusual surnames as you can pick up along female lines where the child is named after the mother/grandmother' s surname.

Hope that helps you :-)

Wow, I'm really impressed by the interest shown here. I am at work so unable to do anything on this. Can't wait to get home and delve some more.

Thanks for everyone's input, really grateful.
