My mother told me the story of an American gas pipe manufacturer who sent a sample pipe to a Birmingham company, claiming it to be the smallest gas pipe in the world. Apparently it was returned with thanks and the coment that 'you will find our example inside'. Mum claimed that it was a member of our family (Barnsley) that was connected to the manufacture of the pipe. Since starting the research of my ancestors, I have noted that gas pipe making was a common occupation among family members. Many years later I heard the same story on the radio but can no longer remember the detail. Does anyone out there know of this please?
