I can't find my husband's grandfather in 1881. While this is not a problem, as we pick him up again in 1888, it is really bugging me that I can't locate him with scotlands people.

Maybe someone with ancestry sub will have more success. Fingers crossed

Have now found it on SP. I think I couldn't find it before because of the wrong age. He would have been 19!

And SP only shows the scan of the page. No mention of 61st Light Infantry or the address! How c*p is that!

Prompt reply from SP:-

<The best thing to do would be to go back into your 'viewed images' and open the entry again. When you have the census page that you purchased in front of you, press the blue 'View Free Header' button. This will take you to the first page in the book. If you continue to press the 'view page after (free) button' it will take you to the page that tells you the address details and name of regiment.>

Never had a use for the header before!

Thanks again Jo for your help. Wish SP had a subscription instead of pay per view. I would have discounted a McMeekin living in Ayr as I know there is another family of them there. (having paid to see them before!)

Kay, a happy bunny
