Newb help!!

Hi, I've just started mapping my family history but I'm having problems finding some pretty basic information. I'm registered on 'ancestry.co.uk' but I can't find some records even though I have definitive information! For example, I can't even find my dads birth certificate: a Robert Blacklee born 1961 in London, quite precise but when I type it in nothing shows up. Likewise for marriage certificate and death certificates. Is some information omitted from the site Or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated!

do you have copies of cert or are you looking for them to order?

Ideally to order. It seems a lot of the searches I make fail to pay dividends: even BC dating to the early 20th century have failed to turn up.

if you know his exact date of birth and where he was born in london

the same goes for the marriage cert if you know all the details

you can send for a cert from the gro or find the local one register office try here

Cheers thanks for the help - I'm not sure If it'll be that helpful though, there's a lot of information I don't know and was hoping simple searchs would provide some viable info. Doesn't seem to be the case though! Seems to be a scarcity.

Hi Shane

Found this one ....was his mothers maiden name Nicholson

June qtr Robert P Blacklee - maiden name of mother Nicholson - Uxbridge vol is 5f page is 266
if this is the correct one that is the ref you would use on the GRO site to send off for the cert

Plus - How about, whilst you are waiting for that cert. to arrive, going back on your fathers line with his parents marriage ?
Do you have all the details there? When did they marry? is that how Blacklee is spelt in the family?
then you can work on your grandparents details.
And then back further.
If you post and are stuck we will help you!
Presume your dad is still alive? If not the death info will have lots of info re birth etc. So give us that date too.
So give us what you know and if you need help we will help you.

Hi, that info sounds correct! How did you find that? I've tried looking through the BMD index on 'ancestry.co.uk' but nothing came up! Are there any other websites to use that are useful?

My family has always spelt our surname 'Blacklee', which is useful because most other people with it spell it 'Blackley' - so there's a bit of a differentiation that makes it salient. My dad's still alive (I'm only 21!); information on my grandparents is a bit limited - all of them died when I was young and my parents don't know that much about them (my mum doesn't even know what her grandparents were called!). My grandad was called Edward Blacklee and he married my grandma Elizabeth Nicholson: Edward was born in London whilst Elizabeth was born in Newcastle. My great-grandad was called George Blacklee and my dad thinks the name of my great-grandma was Eleanor, although he doesn't know the surname. Also, my great-granddad George was a free-mason, I don't know if that helps at all, but there may be some records associated with free-masonry (I've had a check but couldn't find anything, although I was under the impression they kept records).

Hi Shane

Ok that info was on the Complete bmd section on ancestry.

So where are you putting this info on?
May I suggest start with Genes reunited and add what you know.
Then look at putting it on a family tree maker programme at the same time. Dont do what I did and stick it all one Genes and then have to put the same info all on the tree maker..agghhhhh!

Genes is good for contacts and info. But you are best to verify your own info or rather any info given as mistakes can be made and then just get repeated.

So you have your fathers birth cert and you can put your immediate family details on.
ie your mums details on the tree. YOur mum and dads marriage.
Then start to move back on a line. Why not go back on the Blacklee one and work on your fathers side then move to your mothers. up to you how you do it . It is your tree!

When did your Grandparents marry? If you dont know when was the first child born. Ask questions of the family drive em barmy!
Great you are starting out now while they can all give you info!

We can help you but you only find the info once and maybe best we steer you towards the next find you want. ie give you an idea where to look. there is nothing quite like finding that piece of the jigsaw.
So that is my advice and if you need help on something holla!
ps have a look at the useful links too! once you are up and running certain websites will be indispensible tools you will use ie free bmd, family search, ancestry, Gro site, ukbmd, and so on...

Shane do you know if your Grandfather Edward Blacklee had a brother Called Alexander? b 1930 Chelsea registered?
If so then that marriage that Jimmy found in 1927 looks good for being yours. Mothers maiden name was Wadlow.

Do you know when your Grandfather Edward was born? or died?

Hi,

Thanks for all the help! I'll have to speak to my dad tommorow to verify some of those people you've mentioned; I'm not sure if he had a brother called Alexander, it doesn't wring a bell - I'll ask tommorow though. In regards to the search: I'm on the .co.uk version and searching the historical records on the normal seach (I click on the 'search' button which is on the header of the site).
