I'm having trouble finding a connection between the Halesown SOUTHWELL family and Mary TICKLE (b. 1834 Rowley, father Richard Tickle b 1814, m. James Portman 1860). My grandmother, Edith nee SOUTHWELL Hall (b.1896 Hawne), used to tell me when I was a kid that I had a great aunt Mary Tickle, a name that stuck in my mind for obvious reasons. Edith's parents were Charles Southwell (b. 1895 Halesowen) and Alice Jane Farmer (b.1873 Halesowen). Does anyone have information on how Mary Tickle is connected to the SOUTHWELLS? I guess it's possible that my grandmother meant "aunt" in the sense of close friend to the family, but I don't think so. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Shelley Hall

I'm not sure that is the right one on BCC Pete - she is born abt 1834 but Simmadonna's great aunt mary was most likely about the age of her garndmother surely? So born about 1896ish.

That 1881 family looks interesting though. 2nd marriage?

Anyhow. Question is was Tickle even her maiden name? Or was she married to some named Tickle but connected to Edith by her own family?

Not that I've ever heard of. Nor can I find any evidence of such a marriage. I'm kind of stumped.

The thing is--and I didn't say it before because I hesitate to trust my memory, but maybe I should--that I seem to remember my grandmother telling me that Aunt Mary Tickle never married. So maybe this is the wrong one.I just assumed that I had remembered it wrong since how many Mary Tickles can there be in one town? I thought this had to be the one. But it could also be that my grandmother, being across the Atlantic and possibly out of the loop, didn't know about Mary's marriage. As far as the age of this 1834 Mary Tickle goes, it could be right because I want to say that she was my grandmother's aunt as well, which would make her my second great aunt.

OK. so that would make Mary Tickle 62 when Edith was born, and already married for 36 years so I don't quite see why Edith would have known her by her maiden name?
Still possible I suppose.

Is it possible for somebody to look in the 1901 and 1911 census (Edith would have been 5/15 then so I'm guessing Mary Tickle was at least alive in order to be known as her aunt) and see if there were any Mary Tickles of any age around Staffs/Worcs area?

Just a thought - I find that when talking to people of my mothers generation (she's nearly 80) they all seem to use womens maiden names when talking about them. this had led to many a cconfusing conversation between us.

It could be that your relatives always refered to Mary as Mary Tickle wether she was married or not :!:

That's a very good point. In that event, I''d bet that part of the point of telling me about her was to amuse (tickle me? sorry) with the name. But still, something in my brain is nagging at me (probably just a parasite), like there's a part of the picture I'm not remembering or that I misunderstood or am now misunderstanding.

You know family lore can be interesting and funny too.
My Nan told me about a song her Dad used to sing about her cousins, cant think all the names now but something along the lines of Ada, Adelina, Ann and Graham.
Well I hunted for years and only by mistake on LDS found it was one person!!
Just take your info as a seed, let it grow!
Jo :)

Mary Tickle was alive and well in 1956, I knew the name rang a bell, I found her in my Grandfather's Diary, listed in his 'Xmas Card List' says Mary Tickle Cousin. Have to find out who she was. All very odd as I have virtually all my Grandparents family connections, and no one has the surname Tickle. She must have been married I would think.
