Sometimes people went abroad in the hope of better jobs or pay.
Have you found them in America? This site may have them:

Could it have been a delayed effect of the LAncashire Cotton Famine?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashire_Cotton_Famine

in 1871census henry and ann higginson(both born 1849) of blackburn have a son called james born in 1869 and a son called henry in 1871 , they don't reappear until 1901 with more children 2 of which margaret and thomas were born in united states. i think they went about 1880-1881 , because another son robert was born here in 1880(ish) but they are not on the 1881 census

Thats fantastic guys , really appreciate it , thats definately the family , i suspected henry , born 1871 died as a child, and that confirms it because he no longer appears , james did return(he was my gt,gt,grandfather) and married a fannie elizabeth parkes in blackburn . i never thought of checking for higgerson on census . if you don't mind me asking , how did you find the american info?
