On Thursday I went to the delightful National Archives place in Kew.

I discovered my great-grandfather bought a business for £1,000 in 1899.

I wonder if anybody here knows what that amount then would be today?

Don't worry guys and gals....I've just googled it!

In today's money that amount converts to:

£84,031.61p.

Now hunting for that missing 61p......

How interesting VH, what sort of business was it?

Twas a corkmaking factory based in South London where they made those cork things you put in the top of wine bottles - I'm not sure what they're called?

I actually have a pic of them sitting proudly in the back garden in front of a basket full of these. The only problem is I have no idea who the people are in this picture - if only they wrote the names on the back of the photo.....

Several of the magazines do articles on how to date photos and this might give you a clue -- if they were all involved as a family

Combining my Kew discoveries with other information I have gathered recently from a Danish genealogy forum reveals that my great-grandfather and his brother emigrated to the UK (started up families, etc) then jointly owned and ran a cork making business in South London. Then along came a bank manager from Copenhagen who got onto the Board of Directors. With his, no doubt, financial experience he got the two brothers to sell him the company thus leaving the brothers jobless. This Bank Manager guy returns to Denmark then Norway a very rich man.......

On the subject of Kew, do you have to give notice of what you want to look at?

No you don't but do bring along with you the usual means of identification as this will be needed to enable you to obtain the Reader's Ticket. Also bring a pencil for any notes you might wish to jot down as pens are not allowed.
