Homers in Dudley

Postby gilesc » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:56 pm
Hello,
I'm new to GFUK and I'm interested in the Homer/Hawkes-Bevan-Kempster families.
I have my family living in Dudley
Benjamin Homer b 1713 d 1788 in Dudley.
He married Tamar Hawkes in 1734 Dudley. Children were Tamar b 1743 Benjamin b 1745 THOMAS b 1746 (my ancestor) John b 1748, Joseph b 1751 and Mary b 1756.

THOMAS m Mary Truman in Dudley in 1769 but by 1790 the family was in Liverpool as their son james was born there.

I have emailed Dudley Record Office/Archive to see whether the church records are held there.

I am very interested in the occupations of my family ( especially in the Dudley area) so if anyone could give me any pointers I'd be a happy bunny

Regards
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, the trouble is with your Homers there were hundreds of them, so a bit difficult to find in the 1700's. The name Tamar helps though, any Tamar Hawkes or Homer could be one of yours.

I did wonder if the name Hawkes transposed to Hawkeswood or Hawkesford :?: There are a few of those names in the Registers. I found this one in the Old Swinford Apprentice Records for 1687:-

Elizabeth Hawkes Apprenticed as a Housewife to Michael and Jane Parker Stourbridge.

There is also a John Hawkes in the Cradley Court Rolls of March 1558. He was listed as a Essoin, which is basically someone who failed to appear before the Court Baron.

I do think the name Hawkes went on to become Hawkeswood, and Hawkesford.

Will keep looking from Linell.

I have now found via Dudley archives the marriage of Benjamin Homer and Tamar Hawkes and have sent for copy entry. Have also asked whether they have entry for Thomas Homer and Mary Truman m 1768. many thanks for help so far, it has been invaluable. Just printed out "Black Country Nail Trade" . Your site is excellent.
