Thanks a lot for your help on this.
James POLKINGHORN married Katherina GSCHWIND(T) in 1882 and really this posting is about her.
She was born in Germany about 1860, and lived with James in Dalton-in-Furness, but was widowed in 1890.
The 1891 census lists her as Kate POLKINGHORN,widow, age 30, living with her 6 children in Dalton.
Shortly after this, she entrusted the children into the care of the local workhouse (times were hard) and left the area.
There the trail goes cold. She doesn't appear in the 1901/1911 census, I can't find a record of her death or re-marriage.
Can anyone spot her anywhere after 1891? She is my great grandmother, and it remains a mystery as to what became of her.
Many thanks.

Thanks again for your help.
Her father is named John (a farmer) on the marriage cert.
The name Gschwind(t) may have been pronounced without the 'G' and I found her (I think) in 1881 listed as Kate SCHWEND in Bradford aged 19 years. She appears to be an economic migrant, originating from Wurternburg, travelling from Germany with 3 other companions. I think they must have travelled up the Rhine to Rotterdam, then sailed to Hull, and then on to Bradford. Bradford attracted a lot of German migrant workers at that time - there was an area known as 'little Germany'.
But I would love to find a reference to her post 1891. Anyone find anything?
Thanks
Steve
