Kia ora! Am hoping you great folk will be able to help me trace the Irish side of my family. Am looking for information on my Great Great Gandfather and his family. He was Michaelel Joseph Murphy - Dublin Ireland in about 1851-54. He married Isabella Stewart but have not date or any other details. They had 2 children - one, Charles Alfred who was born here in NZ and Maude who I cannot find any details about. Has anybdoy got any info on these family members or point me in the right direction. I am keen to know how my Iriah ancestors came to have siblings born here in New Zealand and if Micahel Murphy had any siblings etc - be greta to come in touch with rellies living over in the UK .
Thanks for your help.

Kia ora to you too. Only just found out that Kia ora is not an orange juice drink in NZ as it is here in UK.
I too have Irish rellies who are proving quite illusive.
I'm sure someone on here will point you in the right direction.

First thing is to find the enbarkation and debarkation records for his trip to New Zealand.
When was Charles Alfred born? Looks like 1876 according to the NZ BMD.
Maude Murphy was born in 1879 in NZ.
That will narrow down the shipping logs I have to look at .....

Hi Deb. Welcome to the site. Do you have Michael Joseph's death certificate?

With the Irish you really have to make sure you know thier county of birth at a minimum. Town would be excellent.
You will be relying on church records and with the Murphy name, even a small town will have several Michaels and Joseph Murphys.
Isabella is rare enough to make it a bit easier. She appears in the New Zealand Post Offfice directories from 1892 onwards in Christchurch as Mrs Isabella Murphy.

I was looking earlier.
Ireland is so hard, as Mark said you really need the town, but they still do things in their old parish too.
Griffiths could be possible
On the other computer I have some surving census from Ireland, most were destroyed, I'll check that tomorrow.
Best bet for Ireland is have a hunting holiday there, but still need to know basics!

Wow - you guys are all amazing. You have given me more info and hope than anywhere yet!!! Just brilliant. No - don'have Michael Josephs Death certificate - all documents are so elusive!!! Not sure of the town he was born in - only that it ws Dublin, Ireland. Charles was born in 1875-76 from what I can gather. Was in the army but wounded in France and had to return home and be discharged - spent rest of his life institutionalised. Not sure when Micahel left Ireland but the last census I cna see reulsts for was that he was staying in London with his father for a night. Would be great to get some info on the shipping records - only info I can comeacross is that a Michael Murphy with the same age and origins signed up for the US army!!! Isabella is hard to track down as well - those shipping records would be brilliant if you get hold of them Mark. Keep coming up against brick walls but learning so much along the way. Don't tempt me - would give ANYTHING to be able to get to your neck of the woods and check things out myself. Sigh!! Oh to win the lottery!!!
Really do appreciate your help - so keen to find out more about my family and to contact any relatives that may be around.
Thanks guys. Happy New Year and whreever you are - keep safe and happy!!!!
Deb

It is a hard slog trolling through the records to New Zealand as they do not have a central index.
The information about the census in London is good, that narrows it down even more.
I know they first lived in Christchurch but what port they came into is unknown.
His death certificate is easy to order from New Zealand BDM I will find the index reference for you...
Same with Isabellas.

Hiya once4 again. If you could order those for me that would be great. I am having no luck at all. As far as Maud goes, a relative into geneology who is living in the US at present says she was born 1875 and had an illegitimate child in 1890 No record of any Isabella Stweart geting married to Michael Murphy anywhere. Know you are interested in researching te Murphy tree and would love to get together with you to put things together a bit more. Wher abouts do you live by the way??
The NZ records seem to be allover the placec and not very accurate - what sites do you find most helpful to get info?
Thanks so much once again for your help.
Happy New Year!!
Deb

Haven't had much chance to look at the shipping records. I have been swamped with new information from qst cousins who have appeared out of thin air....
Best site to start is Cyndi's list.
http://www.cyndislist.com/Of the paid sites, Ancestry will give you the most data and Genes Reunited is brilliant for making contacts.
Your registration number for Maudes birth is 1879/2491
Your registration number for Charles birth is 1876/13478
Enter the registration numbers here and order them if you wish...
